- D. Yustin, DDS, MS; P. Neff, DDS, MS, et al - J. Orofacial Pain 7: 54-60, 1993 - (671kb) Introduction: 0f 353 patients screened, 86 answered positively to questions designed to identify bruxurs. The bruxing patient profile revealed that 100% had working excursive interferances, 78% had balancing excursive interferances, and 95.4% had a premature contact into maximum intercuspation. Most of the bruxing patients had a chief complaint that related to pain, and 89.6% had a craniomandibular disorder. The patients were initially managed with an anterior deprogrammer and were later managed with other occlusal devices as signs and symptoms dictated. Definitive treatment is determined by the patient's maxillomandibular relationship. Category: Bruxism

39. Subjective and Objective Evaluation of Bruxing Patients Undergoing Short-Term Splint Therapy
- N. Mejias - J. Oral Rehab. 9, 279-289, 1982 - (4.26Mb) Introduction: Subjective and objective criteria were utilized to evaluate the effectiveness of short-term bite splint therapy on bruxistic behaviour. A simple bruxism monitoring device was used to check pre-treatment and post-treatment nocturnal bruxism. This preliminary study suggests that short-term splint therapy is effective in eliminating mild to moderate facial pain and dysfunction while reducing bruxistic behaviour. The bruxism monitoring device is a simple and effective tool for diagnosing bruxism quantitatively. Category: Bruxism

Exploring the Wider Role of Dentistry
The Effect of Jaw Problems on the Rest of the Body While many Cranio-Sacral Therapists treat people for Temporo-Mandibuar Joint issues, it can be useful to consider wider issues such as breathing problems and sleep disorders in relationship to the jaws. Another issue is movement disorders such as Tourette’sand dystonia. There are some interesting cases and research into the link between movement disorders and TMJ dysfunction, some of which can be found at Dr Brendan Stack’s website: www.tmjstack.com. What may potentially be of interest to CST practitioners is the possible link between movement disorders such as Tourette’s and irritation of the trigeminal cranial nerve (CN V).This nerve has three branches: ophthalmic, maxillary and mandibular. CBCT in the evaluation of airway - minimizing orthodontic relapse
Dr. Steven Olmos discusses the four points of breathing obstruction For those of us who treat obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) or those who have tried but run into problems that make you want to throw up your hands, think about the four points of breathing obstruction. Each patient has a different set of obstructions, so decisions on how to choose between the hundreds of appliances to treat breathing disorders are based upon multiple points of obstruction. Oral Health Future of Dentisrty Article part3
The future is now (its time to start diagnosing) We need to evaluate our system of treatment. A patient presents with worn dentition or complaints of muscle soreness. The dentist produces a nightguard without further investigation which makes it worse or has no effect. The dentist is unclear what to do. Category: General research and discussion
